Hi, I'm Dr Karen Lumsden
I’m passionate about training and supporting people to gain the research skills and confidence they need. I also enjoy helping people improve their skills, mindset and wellbeing, through 1-1 coaching and mentoring. I’m a social scientist who has spent almost two decades using qualitative methods in research and evaluations – and now I train and support others to do the same.
I began delivering training sessions in qualitative research in 2017 alongside my academic post. Over the years, this training became my passion.
Every session I run is designed to be interactive, supportive, and informative; making qualitative research methods practical and usable in academic and non-academic settings.
Now, with Qualitative Training, I spend every day doing what I love most: supporting academics, professionals, and organisations to build their research skills, knowledge and confidence, progress their research, and develop their careers through:
- Training
- Coaching and Mentoring
- Consultancy
My work on qualitative research has been published in books including Reflexivity in Criminological Research, Reflexivity, and Crafting Autoethnography.
I make qualitative research methods accessible beyond academia.
Alongside my experience working in academia, I have also delivered qualitative research training for social researchers both domestically and internationally across areas of social science.
My specialisms are in sociology and criminology, and I have conducted research in areas including:
- Policing
- Youth
- Communities
- Victims and victimisation
- Social media
- Interpersonal cybercrime, including online misogyny, harassment and trolling.
I am passionate about giving social researchers the knowledge and confidence they need to look beyond the theory and use qualitative methods within their research to create societal change.
When we work together, your sessions will be designed to answer all your questions and move past your stumbling blocks in an engaging and encouraging environment.

Coaching & Mentoring
Launching Qualitative Training and completing my Professional Diploma in Coaching gave me the final push I needed to join the dots between the training, coaching, mentoring and consultancy sides of my business. I can engage in consultancy and coach clients in various contexts and styles. I often use a blend of coaching and mentoring in 1-1 sessions where the focus is on career progression, qualitative projects, writing, and/or doctoral study.
I am also passionate about coaching clients who feel ‘stuck’ in particular life situations and/or are unsure how to move on. For example, many of my clients are looking to gain further insight into how to move through (or transition out of) their professional careers or, for example, whether to leave academia. I had the same experience of feeling lost and disheartened by the pressures of academia and its working practices and structures. I worked my way up to Associate Professor level before burning out and questioning whether I wanted to follow this path any longer. My unique experience of working in/across a variety of research contexts and academic contexts, and of working in different universities in the Scottish and English higher education systems, also mean I am familiar with many of the different challenges and work environments which clients might be working in. I want to help you to make positive steps and changes, to assess and understand where you are, get ‘unstuck’, and look ahead to new beginnings.
My coaching is informed by a variety of styles but I am heavily influenced by Narrative Coaching and Somatic Coaching. I am also trained in Trauma Informed Practice and Coaching. Essentially, I coach in line with what works for the individual and the goals they wish to explore and achieve. I partner with you, so you can identify, shape and achieve your vision of success.
Would we get on?
After relocating back to north Scotland post pandemic I’m lucky to be able to spend more time with family and friends. Most of my spare time is spent exploring the countryside with my two dogs (Lewis and Willow), dog agility classes with Willow the border collie, practising yoga, and reading.
What My Clients Say
"Excellent day! Very discursive and engaging, with the right balance of people talking about individual issues and problems that anyone might have in this area. Karen is a great presenter and very humorous."
“As an international doctoral student in the UK, I felt lost in my research at some point. Luckily, I found Karen and had a chance to have coaching sessions with her. We worked together on qualitative research skills, academic life, networking, and publishing opportunities. After the sessions, I felt more confident and knew what I wanted to do as the next step for my research."
"Karen was very engaging and paced the day well, answering queries to meet participants’ needs and generally assessing which subjects seemed to need the focus. Very approachable as a presenter."
