How a bootcamp works
- Four weeks, eight live sessions
- A training session once a week (i.e. on a Monday morning), covering the qualitative method, analysis approach and/or writing stage
- A group coaching session later in the week (i.e. on a Thursday afternoon), where you bring along what you have done, the stage you are at, and we work on it together. For those not at this stage – bring your questions/concerns and also learn from/with others who are further along in their work than you.
- Small cohorts, so there is time for everyone to share, ask questions, and receive guidance
- Materials, slides, worksheets and recordings throughout
- And an online community space to keep talking between sessions and for a month post-bootcamp
The group coaching sessions are where most of the real learning happens. Watching someone else work through a problem you have not reached yet is often more useful than being taught about it in advance or only covering it ‘in theory’.
Reflexive Thematic Analysis Bootcamp
Over four weeks we cover
- Reflexivity in thematic analysis – and why it features throughout our analysis, not just as an add on at the end
- Familiarising yourself with your data, and why this stage cannot be rushed
- Coding – including how to go beyond the surface of what people said and the importance of interpretation rather than topic summaries or mere description
- Generating initial themes – including building candidate themes, and recognising when you have a topic summary rather than a theme
- Developing and reviewing themes – including the importance of thematic maps
- Refining, defining and naming themes
Writing up – including rigour, reflexivity and being prepared to defend your work
Who it is for
Doctoral researchers in the thick of analysis. Postdocs and academics who need to publish that journal paper. Practitioners doing qualitative work without formal methods training. You do not need prior experience of reflexive TA or your own data, but it does help if you have these. If you’re not at this point why not explore our half-day Masterclass on How to Conduct Reflexive Thematic Analysis first.

Writing Bootcamp
Qualitative Interviewing and Design Bootcamp
Why four weeks rather than one day
Because qualitative research design, planning, and analysis takes time, and most training gives you the ideas or theory without the space to apply them. A day of teaching is easy to absorb and easy to lose. Four weeks with something due each week and accountability is better, and it works. Don’t wait until you start your qualitative interviews or reflexive thematic analysis, or submit your first draft of a journal paper or PhD chapter, to find out that what you planned to do in interviews ‘doesn’t work’, or you are stuck with‘100s of codes’, or your journal paper is rejected as you haven’t written it up qualitatively.
When you do it this way and make the mistakes, it’s more difficult to work back and start again – you lose time, and often also, lose confidence. The bootcamps give you expert guidance and support, a space to ask questions when you’re stuck, accountability, and the opportunity to learn from peers too, while covering all of the basics in the training.

Common questions for the Reflexive Thematic Analysis Bootcamp
Which thematic analysis approach do we focus on?
The bootcamp focuses on Braun and Clarke’s Reflexive Thematic Analysis approach and their 6 phases which feature in their original 2006 paper, and as updated in their book, Thematic Analysis: A Practical Guide, published by Sage in 2021. We do not cover codebook approaches or inter-coder reliability. However, we do at times discuss the differences between these approaches in the ‘thematic analysis family’ to help us understand how reflexive thematic analysis is different.
What if I miss a session?
Everything is recorded. But the coaching sessions are the point, so protect those in your diary if you can. You are welcome to sign up and participate by accessing recordings and posting in the community, if you have a reason which stops you from attending live sessions (i.e. different time zone). If you would like to do this, please contact karen@qualitativetraining.com to discuss further.
How much time will it take outside the sessions?
Expect one day per week (at the minimum) to work on your own data. You will get more out of it the more you put in, but the pace is designed to be manageable alongside a job. You are also accountable to yourself for how much time and work you want to put into reading, and analysis, outside of the two weekly sessions.
Do I need to have finished collecting data?
Not necessarily, but ideally you need enough to work on — a few transcripts is plenty to start with. If you don’t have data I can provide examples for you to work with, but it isn’t the same as having your own data available.
Can I join if I’ve already started or finished my analysis?
Absolutely. We often have participant join who have started their coding, who have finished analysis but want to iteratively look back at their work and evaluate their decisions. You can join at any stage of your reflexive thematic analysis journey. This is also one of the benefits of the bootcamp – to hear from, and learn from peers who are at different stages of their analysis journey.
This bootcamp date is too early for me. Will you run future dates of the RTA bootcamp?
Yes. At the moment, the schedule of bootcamps is: October 2026, February 2027, May 2027, July 2027, October 2027. If you would like to keep up to date with future dates, subscribe to the Qualitative Training newsletter.
